We recommend annual chimney cleaning when the appliance is used regularly during the year. Our technician will let you know how dirty the chimney is once they have completed the cleaning.
When a fireplace or stove is not used this provides an opportunity for birds or other critters to build nests inside the chimney or cap. If you don't know the history of the appliance we always recommend having it cleaned and inspected before using it.
There are various factors which can affect how dirty your wood stove/fireplace and chimney will get. Such as the type of wood you are burning, how often you burn, how hot you burn, the weather conditions at the time of burning, the air flow in your home, and other appliances within the building. A discussion with our technician on site will help to answer these concerns.
The best wood to burn in an indoor fireplace or wood stove is seasoned hardwood such as oak, hickory, ash, beech, and maple, because it burns hotter, longer, and creates less creosote buildup than softwoods (pine, spruce, etc).
While poplar is a common hardwood in Alberta, it is not a suitable wood for indoor burning because, like softwood, it is low density with a high moisture content.
It is important to only use wood that has been cut and dried for at least a year, as "green" (freshly cut) wood burns poorly, produces excessive smoke, and can be dangerous.
